SGT. James Riden
A poem by SGT James Riden, Wounded
Craftmanship is a word and to some, just a word
But I don't take it lightly, some think this is absurd
In this day and age, it seems, it's lost to years gone by
But craftmanship is dear to me, and I'll tell you why.
To the younger generation, a piece of wood is just a thing
No one wants to look for grain or knots or aged rings.
Metal is just a strong piece of steel nowadays
No one cares about the forge, the weld, the brake, the braze.
To craft something with your hands, to use the tools you have
To reach into your soul and find the talent that God gave
To turn a simple piece of metal or maybe wood
Into a beautiful work of art, because you felt you could.
It takes a little longer, the skills you need to learn
You cannot rush and hurry, the lathe that needs to turn
You measure twice, cut only once and pay attention to your task
The craftsman knows that this is all the piece of art is going to ask
Slow down and smell the sawdust, take time to use your square.
Don't go so fast and you might see, the world that's really there
Try to learn what you need to know so that, someday, you'll understand
That craftsmanship is not just a word, it's doing the best that you can.
